After producing one of the most influential anime series ever\u2014Neon Genesis Evangelion\u2014animation studio GAINAX went from adapting a comic about high school relationships to something even more unexpected: a coming-of-age story about robots that come out of a young boy's head. Thanks to its sheer weirdness, amazing animation, surprising emotionality, and atypical (but awesome) music choices, FLCL emerged as a cult hit in the early '00s\u2014one that just received an unexpected sequel some 18 years later.
