174: Teaching Entrepreneurship at West Point with Army Veteran Lissa Young On today’s episode, Joe Crane talks about Teaching Entrepreneurship at West Point with Army Veteran Lissa Young. Lissa currently teaches in the Leadership and Management program at the US Military Academy in West Point. Tune in! “The kind of leadership that thrives in combat is entrepreneurial leadership.” -Lissa Young Meet Lissa Young Lissa graduated from the US Military Academy in 1986. She served as an army aviator afterwards, and flew "Chinook" cargo helicopters. During her career at the army, she also taught at West Point with the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership faculty. When she transitioned out in 2002, she worked in the corporate world as a lead sales representative for air traffic control systems in the Middle East. She received a number of awards, including a Presidential Fellowship by Harvard University. Into Business and Education Lissa studied at Harvard, and started a business with her classmate upon graduation. They built a craft rum distillery in Ipswich, Massachusetts. Now, their business is thriving and is known as Privateer Rum. After several months, she joined the US Military Academy faculty in West Point. By 2014, she started an Entrepreneurial Leadership course. Entrepreneurial Leadership at West Point Lissa shares her passion in teaching entrepreneurial leadership. She even worked on it with a Harvard professor during her doctoral degree there. When she taught at West Point, cadets consulted her on specific ideas for their entrepreneurial ventures. Eventually, more and more cadets sought for her help. Now, West Point has the Entrepreneurial Leadership elective course in their Management program.
