He graduated from West Point in 2005, and led a highly successful counterinsurgency campaign in Baghdad. In this episode, he tells the story of how he was shot and killed by an enemy sniper. Shot and Killed in Iraq Josh served as an infantry officer in the army for ten years. He experienced a pivotal experience in his career in 2007 when he was shot and killed in Iraq. A sniper bullet ricocheted in his thigh and severed his artery. "It was like I was running sprints around the track and couldn't stop. I knew that was it." - Josh Mantz To this day, he can still remember what happened. Blood crept up to his legs until his thigh became numb. He flatlined for several minutes before he was revived. Purpose of a Second Life Josh couldn't explain the emotional void he experienced afterward. His journey was filled with a number of pitfalls, including suicide attempts and depression. "The experience of dying would pale in comparison to the decade-long emotional struggle that I would go through as I sought to find meaning in a second life." - Josh Mantz   Eventually he found himself speaking across the country and helping the Department of Defense. That led to more speaking engagements. Mission of Darker Souls Josh shared how still failed to recognize the deeper symptoms to himself. He understands the need for accessing help from others when dealing with trauma. Now, he has his own company named Darker Souls. They seek to help people recognize and validate the true source of their emotional pain. They help them find meaning from their suffering and ultimately grow from their experiences.
