A physics major when drafted by the Army in the Vietnam era, Sam was told by friends that he'd do better in the Navy, since they wanted technical people. He listened and joined and wound up being a first class petty officer by the time he was done doing three tours. While docked in Portland, Oregon, Sam met Howard Volum, head of Tektronix. Impressed with Sam, Howard told him he had a job if he came back to Portland and that was the start of Sam's civilian career.
