The magic "fix it" ingredients

Laughter and play keep the Bogey man away.

In my house both music and humor are a PRIORITY. Our family has certain rules that we abide by and they've worked well for us on most days.
1. If there is music playing, SING.

My family knows that there is no way to get out of this one. Unless you are too sick to join in, it's expected of everyone in the room. Music heals and nourishes. Singing or playing an instrument is one of the few activities that involves using the whole brain. It is intrinsic to all cultures and has surprising benefits not only for learning language, improving memory and focusing attention, but also for physical coordination, brain development and pain management.
2. Have a sense of humor about yourself.

We make fun of each other out of love, and when this happens, we CHOOSE to enjoy the moment, rather than take offense. I tend to mix my metaphors... ((often))... and my family knows that when mommy messes up, it's a great opportunity to howl with laughter. Studies show that when laughter is shared, it binds people together and increases happiness and intimacy. Laughter also triggers healthy physical changes in the body. Humor and laughter strengthen your immune system, boost your energy, diminish pain, and protect you from the damaging effects of stress. Best of all, this priceless medicine is fun, free, and easy to use.
3. Play every day AND all day.

New research suggests that MORE play equals more productive learning at all ages and stages of our lives. Play is not just essential for kids--- it can be an important source of relaxation and stimulation for adults as well! Playing with your romantic partner, co-workers, pets, friends, and children is a sure (and fun) way to fuel your imagination, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and improve your mental health.
PLUS actively playing with your kids will not only improve your own mood and well-being, it will make your kids smarter, better adjusted, and less stressed.
