\nMarvin Kelb's book 'Imperial Gamble' offers an excellent account of Ukraine's history up to the Russian occupation of Crimea in 2014. It explains how this country has struggled to consolidate its identity, oscillating like a pendulum between the East and the West, to depart from communism and to become a democracy with a free market economy. The current war in Ukraine stems from the same issues that Ukraine and Russia (their people and their leaders) have been trying to 'resolve' over the course of history. Will there be a chance for peace and reconciliation in 2022?
