Invasive Species a Unique Opportunity. The host for this show is Keli'i Akina. The guest is Bryan Mayer.
Hawaii’s goal of advancing agriculture and food sustainability cannot happen in a vacuum. Deliberate action must be taken to identify and remove roadblocks to profitable local food production.
Hawai'i already has a thriving cattle ranches, but invasive species such as Maui’s Axis deer pose a unique opportunity as an additional source of meat products.
Problem is, there is no state meat inspection system. However, nationally recognized educator and butcher Bryan Mayer thinks that might be just what Hawai'i needs, in addition to adopting other policies to fulfill Hawaii's meat-producing potential.
On today’s episode of 'Hawaii Together,' host Keli'i Akina speaks with Mayer about the state of Hawaii’s meat industry, how Hawaii’s Axis deer and other invasive animals fit into the situation, and some of the other challenges the industry will need to address.
