\nThe harder life becomes, the more a person's world narrows down, until there is only oneself left. 'Everything is falling apart. How will 'I' survive?' Paradoxically the answer often lays in opening up one's world rather than narrowing it down: reaching out to others, helping others with their problems, understanding that one is not alone but part of a whole community trying to deal with a troubled present and facing an uncertain future. When giving help, people usually aid their friends, even more often their family, and probably most often their child. When is a child most dependent on their parents' help? During their first years. When do parents feel most connected to their child, most loving toward their child? Usually during their child's first years.
