\nAriela is from a Mexican Jewish family who falls in love with a Mexican man, Ivan, who is not Jewish. Due her family's traditions, her parents and friends attempt every means to convince her to find a young Jewish man instead. Ariela is a mural artist, who has found that she is more in tune with her gentile boyfriend and his family, who are deeply involved in the arts. Problems arise when her boyfriend insists on meeting her family, who she has not told that she is dating a gentile. She promises this in a month, but does not follow through. So after an argument, they break up, and she dates a series of young Jewish men. Ariela decides to sign her new mural painting with the name 'Leona,' the Spanish equivalent of her Hebrew name, Ariela. She still harbors feelings for her former boyfriend. She contacts him and he invites her to an engagement party of his family member, where he tells her that he is also engaged to another Mexican woman. She goes home and attempts to drown herself.
