\nGuy Gruters had already completed over 400 combat missions in the O-1 Birddog, only to be shot down as a Misty Fast Forward Air Controller during the war in Viet Nam. After recovering from significant injuries from that combat ejection, he chose to return to the dangerous Misty mission - only to be shot down again.

\nBadly injured and captured by the enemy, Guy was beaten, tortured, and watched an Air Force Academy classmate die from injuries inflicted by their captors. He descended into a hellish swirl of hatred for his enemies, and had an overwhelming desire to kill himself and deny the North Vietnamese the opportunity to use him as a pawn in the war.
