\nRoopmati Khandekar, who is from India, helps us understand the extent to which Thanksgiving is celebrated in India. It is not celebrated or recognized as a national holiday in India. But it is observed in the state of Goa under a different name popularly known as 'ladainha' or 'ladin.'  'Ladin' literally mean litany to the Virgin Mary.  During the Thanksgiving ritual, people thank God for all the material and spiritual benefits. Christians start preparing for Thanksgiving celebrations by purchasing wheat and gram, candles, wine and colored paper. A platform/altar is decorated with flowers. Celebrations include singing of litany, hymns and prayers. Several other feasts at various times during the year celebrate the theme of giving thanks, such as Onam, celebrated in South India, and Vaisakhi, celebrated in Punjab and Haryana, and is in some ways similar the a bigger holiday, Diwali.
