\nOld homes can be very valuable--the fine oak, cedar or redwood boards, the craftsman cabinetry, the old mirrors and doors--true collectables.  Concrete is crushed and reused as fill material.  Old rebars are made of very high quality steel.  Deconstructing is a well-paid skill, adding to Hawaii's tax base.  An enormous amount of energy goes into making and shipping building materials.  Using this "embodied energy" reduces CO2 emissions.  Destruction, on the other hand, only adds to our landfill woes and requires new energy-intensive materials.
