\nThe Future of Farming. The host for this show is Mitch Ewan. The guest is Adam Strubeck.
Hawai'i faces competing land uses for renewable energy generation and agriculture. Agrivoltaics is the combination of solar energy production and agriculture. Agrivoltaics research is rapidly advancing and could have major implications for the food-energy nexus. Traditional agrivoltaics involves planting crops underneath solar panels; however, alternate configurations of agrivoltaic systems are emerging which incorporate more diverse production of energy, plants, and livestock. Students at the University of Hawai'i at M\u0101noa theorized an alternative configuration of agrivoltaics that would mimic the diverse tropical agroforests in Pacific Islands. Agrivoltaic systems could be critical for creating self-sufficiency in food and energy for remote communities and agricultural operations.
