Future of the Big Three and Everything Auto

Jon, Randall and Eddie discuss the future of The BIG 3 and everything auto!

Born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Eddie Alterman grew up around, in, and under automobiles. He learned to drive at the age of 10 behind the wheel of his father’s 1962 Porsche 356B.

In 1991, Alterman’s passion for cars led him to the door of Automobile Magazine where, between classes at the University of Michigan, he maintained the magazine’s fleet of test cars. He went on to hold various positions there (with a side gig as columnist for Men’s Journal), before leaving the magazine in 2004.

In that year, Alterman started MPH. Billed as the anti-car-magazine, MPH combined the irreverence of Spy with the offbeat storytelling of a 1960s-era Car and Driver. Results were mixed. MPH folded two years later, but not before many, many traffic laws had been violated.

After MPH, Alterman took back up with Men’s Journal and launched an automotive-lifestyle website, motivemag.com, while contributing to the New York Times.

In 2009, Alterman was named editor-in-chief of Hearst Magazines’ Car and Driver, the world’s largest automotive publication. There, he expanded the brand’s digital, commercial, and experiential offerings while reinvigorating the printed magazine. In 2015, he assumed the additional responsibility of editorial oversight for Road & Track.

In 2019, Alterman was named Chief Brand Officer for Hearst Autos; in this role, he helps to shape the editorial and business strategies for Hearst’s automotive brands, including Car and Driver, Road & Track, Bring a Trailer, and AutoWeek. He is 48 years old and lives with his wife, two daughters, one dog, and one old Porsche in Franklin, Michigan.
