Indie Film Weekly 04.05.16: Indies Are Having a Theatrical Moment

Published: April 5, 2016, 4:28 a.m.

This episode of Indie Film Weekly goes from local to global as audiences show up in theaters around the world for low-budget features. No Film School Founder Ryan Koo and Editor-in-Chief Liz Nord bring news of recently released indies from New York to China and how despite—or perhaps because of—surrounding controversies, people are heading the theaters in significant numbers. We chat about several indies currently doing well theatrically, including Jeff Nichols' ‘Midnight Special’, Don Cheadle's ‘Miles Ahead,’ and the Taika Waititi Sundance hit from New Zealand, ‘Hunt for the Wilderpeople,’ which broke box office records in that country over the weekend. We also discuss a new record set on YouTube and how it might affect indie makers, as well as a follow-up to last week's story about movie studios attempting to affect anti-LGBT legislation in some southern U.S. states. As always, the episode includes a rundown of the latest filmmaking tools, upcoming grant and lab deadlines, and indie film releases that you won't want to miss while you're busy making films.
