Perhaps partly driven by Trump’s policies of the last four years.  China’s five-year plan shows is concerns about being able to build microchips from Taiwan any more. They've been trying to get ahead in chip mfrg, but it’s hard. Taiwan is so good; what the US should do is create excellent economic relations with Taiwan and buy from there. The reason the US is better at designed—Intel, Nvidia, AMD—and Taiwan is better at mfrg.
