Chapter Forty-Eight - Jon 6 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Published: July 27, 2020, 4 a.m.

Jon receives great news that Sam will indeed be joining him in taking his Night’s Watch vows. Less joyful that Jon doesn’t get the job he wants or expects. The boys take their vows while Ghost plays a macabre game of fetch. Mackelly and Simon, whose watch began 49 episodes ago, thank the latest watchers on the wall.

Chapter Review:
Somehow Jon beats Sam to breakfast, but maybe Sam was weighed down by news that he’ll be taking Chett’s place as steward to Maester Aemon. Jon is understandably pleased with himself. They hurry to the sept where the Night’s Watch bigwigs are gathered to welcome their newest brothers.

Mormont assigns each of them to a role. Everyone goes pretty much where you’d expect, apart from Jon who is mystifyingly assigned to the Stewards as Mormont’s attendant. Jon gets mad. His friends point out that he is being groomed for leadership and he should stop his moaning.

Jon and recently converted Samwell say their vows before the Old Gods in a weirwood north of the wall. They are welcomed to the brotherhood by a few crows who accompanied them, but the reverie comes to an abrupt galt when Ghost trots into the circle carrying an unidentified human hand.
