SUFB 1080: How To Affect Environmental Change

Published: Nov. 11, 2020, 5 a.m.

Now that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris are the President-Elect and Vice President-Elect, respectively, we are going to expect some change in Environmental Regulations in the US. A change in Climate Change policies including rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement will have environmental impacts around the globe. Most of the changes will happen at the Federal level, so how can you help make sure these changes go into effect and how can you change yourself.

Voting is a powerful thing. For the 5+ years I have run this podcast, I told people that voting is the biggest step in making sure you can live for a better Ocean. Voting to power officials that know and want to protect the environment is crucial in changing our ways as a planet; however, it is also the first step.

Your new job is to make sure the politicians you elected will bring about environmental change. There are a number of ways to do this. You can work in Marine Conservation or work for an organization that engages with government officials to push through laws and policies that are environmentally responsible.

If you don't work in Marine Conservation, you can volunteer on the Board of Directors for a small to a medium-sized organization that helps bring about change in the environment. Your skillset might be key to making sure the organization runs smoothly. You can be an accountant, in marketing, a bank teller that knows numbers, a stay-at-home-parent that is highly organized to run a household. There is always a skillset that can be used to run an organization.

You can also be environmentally responsible at home. Making sure you're buying power goes far to protect the Ocean. By from Zero-waste stores if there is one close by, stay away from single-use plastics and refuse any plastic that you know doesn't get recycled. These are things that you can do right away (the next time you go grocery shopping for example).

Use the change in the Presidency as an inspiration that things can change for the better, but we have to put the work in. If Stacey Abrams didn't start an organization to properly register over 800,000 voters, Georgia would have never voted for democrats. Change is hard, but it's possible if you work hard.

Let's put the work in to be better and live for a better Ocean. You with me?
