The Newman Dynasty

Published: May 3, 2014, 3 p.m.

Matthew Sweet looks at the music of the Newman Dynasty of film composers, founded by Alfred and including David, whose score features in "Tarzan", released this week. Alfred Newman scored over 200 films, won 9 Academy Awards and is considered one of the most important figures in the history of Hollywood film music. He was also head of a great dynasty of film composers: brother Lionel, sons David, Thomas and daughter Maria, and nephew Randy Newman; and the dynasty continues on into the next generation. Matthew selects examples from the Newman catalogue and includes music from this week's featured new release, "Tarzan", with a new score by David Newman. The Classic Score of the week is Alfed Newman's "How The West Was Won". #soundofcinema.
