047 Johan Mellqvist, Professor, Earth and Space Sciences, Optical Remote Sensing, Chalmers University of Technology

Published: Dec. 2, 2016, 6 a.m.

Johan Mellqvist is professor in the optical remote sensing group. He focuses his research on the development of spectroscopic optical methods and to use these to gather data related to different environmental problems.

This includes estimating trends of various gaseous species in the large-scale atmosphere to working with air quality issues with particular focus on mapping and quantifying fugitive emissions of gases from industries and to control ship emissions. Johan is a national expert in measuring diffuse emission of hydrocarbons (VOC) and he works with European standardization (CEN).

Johan explains what a "sniffer" is, how that technology works and how that was a spin-off from the original idea to develop survelliance tools to see whether ships were obeying international rules and regulations, or not.

With a background from the car industry, Johan finds it interesting that no one asked on beforehand if it was possible to measure if the SECA regulations were obtained or not. We discuss the results from his work and how his "yellow mailbox" has become a "household name" globally.

If you haven't listened to episode 39 with Anna Larsson, maybe you should do that prior to listening to Johan, but I can assure you, this episode is very interesting anyhow.
