Here\u2019s what I want my Mother\u2019s Day to look like:\nWake up in a quiet space with no people around me\nLay in bed and read\nMimosa and french toast delivery\nGet a massage\nGo shopping\nLunch with unlimited wine (maybe with friends, not with family)\nCatch up on Real Housewives\nUnlimited dark chocolate consumption\xa0\nNap\nVodka gimlet happy hour with girlfriends\nDate night with husband\n\xa0\n\xa0\nI don\u2019t want to:\nPrepare any meals or snacks\nThink about what the hell is for dinner\nDo laundry\nDo dishes\nEmpty the dishwasher\nGo grocery shopping\n\xa0\nI don\u2019t want to negotiate:\nHow many bites of breakfast\nOr lunch\nOr dinner\nHow many minutes till naptime\nWhat toys can come in the car\nWhat toys can come in bed\nWhat toys can go to school\nHow cracked the door is at bedtime\nIs tonight bath night\nDo we have to wash hair\nIs mommy or daddy reading stories\n\xa0\nI don\u2019t want to look for:\nThe missing tiny, clear lego piece\xa0\nThe random toy someone gave us two years ago that is suddenly of the utmost significance\nThe beloved soccer shirt that must be worn everyday\n\xa0\nI also don\u2019t want to:\xa0\nPack a school lunch\nCut your bread the wrong way\nGive you the wrong cup\nOr the wrong spoon\nOr the wrong napkin.\xa0\n\xa0\nOh, and I really don\u2019t want to clean pee off the wall or poop off your bum \u2013 or the toilet seat, or the leg of your pants.\n\xa0\nFurthermore, I don\u2019t want to feed the dog, smell the dog, let the dog out, keep the kid from yanking the dog\u2019s tail, or clean the dog\u2019s diarrhea off the heated floors\n\xa0\nThe best gift you could give me is a day alone.\xa0A day where I would do everything I never get to do on my own timeline.\xa0\n\xa0\nBUT, here\u2019s what would happen\u2026 I would look at pictures of you.\xa0I would watch the video of your first bath.\xa0I would watch the video of you crawling on the beach and squawking like a seagull when you were 10 months old.\xa0I would watch the video of your first steps at Lala\u2019s house, chasing a piece of cheese. I would look at that picture of us on the ferry to Nantucket where your hair is blowing in the wind and you are filled with bliss.\xa0I would look at the picture of you on your first day of preschool, filled with concern and cuteness.\xa0I would look at the picture of you this Christmas when you realized that the Santa dude brings PRESENTS.\xa0I would look at the picture of you laughing with your dad that I just took a couple weeks ago.\xa0\n\xa0\nI would be away from you and all I would want is to be with you.\xa0Because that\u2019s how it works, isn\u2019t it?\xa0I need you as much as you need me.\xa0\n\xa0\nSo, we will spend mother\u2019s day together.\xa0There will likely be some epic meltdowns, because history tells me that Mother\u2019s Day is when those are most likely to happen.\xa0There might be a time out or two (for me, if not for you).\xa0\n\xa0\nThere will be wine and chocolate \u2013 but probably not in unlimited quantities, because I will want to be the one to read you bedtime stories and share your final snuggle of the day.\xa0\n\xa0\nTo all you mamas out there who want Mother\u2019s Day to be about NOT being a mom for 24 hours, I HEAR you.\xa0And I raise a glass to you.\xa0\n\xa0\nBeing a mother to my Vinnie is the honor of a lifetime \u2013 although it usually doesn\u2019t feel that way.\xa0But there are moments when it strikes me over the head \u2013 like the few times we have had to go to Seattle Children\u2019s Hospital for little things and I have to hold back tears walking through the hospital doors because I am acutely aware that some kids walk though these doors and they never walk out.\xa0\n\xa0\nI get to me someone\u2019s mom.\xa0It is a job I will fail at miserably.\xa0But in spite of that it will always be my biggest and more proud accomplishment.\xa0\n\xa0\nNo matter what you do today, know that you are someone\u2019s most special person.\xa0How lucky are you??\xa0Happy Mother\u2019s Day Shameless Moms.\nLearn more about your ad choices.
