In 1989, two MIT artificial intelligence researchers made a terrifying prediction. \u201cWithin a few years,\u201d wrote Rodney Brooks and Anita Flynn, \u201cit will be possible at modest cost to invade a planet with millions of tiny robots.\u201d Their paper \u201cFast, Cheap and out of Control: A Robot Invasion of the Solar System,\u201d, argued that small, autonomous \u201cgnat robots\u201d would soon become cheap enough to solve problems en masse.
