As Hurricane Maria approached Puerto Rico in late September 2017, planetary scientist Ed Rivera-Valentin knew he needed to get out. His apartment was near the coast, in Manat\xed, and some projections had the storm passing directly over. \u201cI knew I couldn\u2019t stay there because something bad was going to happen,\u201d he says.
