Show topic: In this episode, Ray Taylor reviews the Bengali film Aparajiti, also known as The Unvanquished, directed by Satyajit Ray. A part of the Apu Trilogy, Aparajiti is the second film in the series and follows the life of Apu from childhood to adolescence as he and his family move from rural Bengal to Varanasi and then back to Bengal. The film was not well received locally upon its release due to its portrayal of the relationship between Apu and his mother, but received widespread critical acclaim internationally and won numerous awards, including the Golden Lion and Critics Award at the Venice Film Festival. Join Ray as he discusses the themes, characters, and technical aspects of Aparajiti and its place in the Apu Trilogy.
