On 19th February 1975, Margaret Thatcher gave her first interview as party leader \u2013 and she gave it to Jimmy Young on Radio 2. In this fascinating telescoped 50\u2019 \u2013 she assures Jimmy that he is fine to call her Margaret \u2013 despite what listeners say. She also suggests that when her time comes to leave office \u2013 she will go with good grace. And \u2013 most tellingly - on the issue of Europe \u2013 given the decision to confirm entry to the common market loomed \u2013 she suggested (33\u2019 in) that a referendum was simply inappropriate as the issue is not \u2018clear-cut\u2019 enough. She sees why referenda work on clear cut issues but \u201c\u2026.about a common market treaty and its negotiations that\u2019s a very very different thing\u201c.
