Writing for the majority, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. said a president \u201cmay not be prosecuted for exercising his core constitutional powers, and he is entitled, at a minimum, to a presumptive immunity from prosecution for all his official acts.\u201d But, Roberts added, the president \u201cenjoys no immunity for his unofficial acts, and not everything the President does is official. The President is not above the law.\u201d\xa0

In the dissent, Justice Sonia Sotomayor stated, The majority \u201creshapes the institution of the presidency\u201d and \u201cmakes a mockery of the principle\u201d that \u201cno man is above the law,\u201d wrote Sotomayor, joined by Justices Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson. \u201cWith fear for our democracy, I dissent.\u201d
