LAST WEEK had plenty to chew on for people who like a good dose of impending doom: As we prepare for the election of Pope Benedict's successor, a 20-foot sinkhole swallowed a Florida man while he lay in bed, and a swarm of more than 30 million locusts ate its way across Egypt — interestingly, just three weeks before the start of Passover.
