Abstract: Pictorial balance modulates the effects of salience and top-down direction on eye movements. When a perfectly balanced picture, a picture where balance has no effect on eye movements is viewed by someone who can disregard saliency and is innately disposed, the gaze is attentive to the entire picture without being directed to any one place and peripheral vision is facilitated. A study using balanced framed LED pictures showed that they are visually different to painters from identical pictures render unbalanced with a slightly different frame. The balanced pictures have bilateral quadrant luminance symmetry and a slightly more luminous lower half. A formula is presented for the calculation of pictorial balance that is confirmed by the study. The more a picture is balanced, the more it will appear unified and harmonious. The name given by the author to this effect is pictorial coherency. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info
