Searching for Meaning - Aligning Your Personal Philosophy with Your Business

“The majority of people want to show up at the best level possible.” -Lia Dunlap

What do you believe about people? Have you ever found yourselves stuck on hold as you try to reach someone for help? When making business decisions, it's important to be aligned with your purpose, your core and your values.

Your business is more than just a series of transactions. In today's world of conscious leadership, your business is an extension of who you are and what you stand for. In this week's episode, Lia Dunlap talks about aligning your philosophy with your business.

Part One of ‘Searching for Meaning - Aligning Your Personal Philosophy with Your Business’

Just like one of those corporate customer service lines, after waiting for five minutes or longer, you end up choosing the wrong menu, having to start all over again, and ending up hearing the machine tell you that you aren't recognized by the system. All the while, your blood pressure is rising and you're building a thorough list of grievances.

The second you get a real person on the phone, you aren't feeling charitable, empathetic, or even friendly towards those people. Yet the truth is those people are the ones who will support you and find a solution to your problem.

“When we align our philosophy about life with our business, we create a strong brand as a foundation for our product or service.” – Lia Dunlap

The majority of people want to do their work at their best. They want to show up at the highest level possible. Maybe it doesn't work out that way every day? Perhaps they just spilled some coffee on their lap. They could be picking up your call, juggling a lot full of napkins, and making sure they can help you. All while trying to grab the phone and make a connection with you.

What we believe about people and the world tends to color how we act. Not just in our lives, but in our work and our business. If we have these ideas and these philosophies about what we believe, then we take them with us. By the time you've spent 10 20 or even 16 minutes on hold, you're probably not going to be in a great mood.

You might have a shallow impression of the person who's on the other line about to help you. You may even be frustrated with the state of the world. Like everything is wrong. Of course, this rarely helps the situation. When was the last time you found yourself in this position? How did you feel? How do you think the other person on the other side of the line felt?

Part Two of ‘Searching for Meaning - Aligning Your Personal Philosophy with Your Business’

Breathe, align, request, and respond. First, we need to breathe. Take a moment to center yourself and breathe. Align your philosophy about life. Make a transparent and honest request. Ask for what you need and want before you respond. Make sure that you respond again from the aligned place of your philosophy.

It's stressful and exhausting if you ever get off one of those phone calls. You feel depleted. If you use this technique, you can diffuse the situation and get to the true meaning of any interaction. You can move something forward. You're into that conversation because you want something to be fixed. To access more information, resources, tools, or to complete our goals, we have to communicate.

We have to share with each other. We have to have useful communication. If you can remember to take a seat at the bar, then you can be present enough to approach the situation in an aligned way, which is excellent. It's essential as business leaders to align with our philosophy about life.

When we do, we can create a strong brand that not only our clients but a brand that we can rely on, right as a foundation for our product or service. And people will start to know what you stand for and you will know where to draw the line as a leader.

Sometimes, following somebody else's pattern is like allowing others to put you into a box. You're doing work that doesn't fit with your integrity, pushing deadlines and bending corners to please a client who was never going to work with you in the first place. That's a tough one.

Knowing what you stand for and believe in can help. What you do matters because people are waiting for you to show up and stand firm in your philosophy so that they can find you. Align your philosophy with your business so people have a clear vision of what you're about and what you offer.
