Decades ago, I was the best man for my buddy Charlie and was in charge of driving the bridal car from the church to the reception\u2026the happy couple were in the back seat\u2026next to me up front was the bride\u2019s sister-in-law\u2026\nWhen I started the car, \u201cWelcome To The Jungle\u201d started playing on the radio\u2026the sister-in-law freaked out\u2026 \u201cWhat is this garbage?...turn it off!\u201d\u2026I looked at Charlie\u2026he looked at me and shrugged\u2026 no sense in making waves\u2026I switched to a pop station\u2026but the sister-in-law\u2019s violent reaction to the gunners stayed with me\u2026\nThen not long ago, I was in the car with a friend when rage against the machine\u2019s \u201cBulls On Parade\u201d came on the radio\u2026I instinctively turned it up\u2026awesome song, right?\nBut my friend shrieked\u2026 \u201cWhat is this [bleep]?\u201d She said\u2026\u201dit\u2019s awful!\u2026you can\u2019t possibly like this\u2026\u201d\nI was slightly taken aback\u2026we go back a couple of decades and she came from an alt-rock radio background, too\u2026her life used to be filled with this kind of music\u2026how could she not like Rage Against The Machine?...\n\u201cI don\u2019t know,\u201d she said\u2026 \u201cMaybe I\u2019m just getting old\u2026I prefer softer stuff these days\u201d\u2026\nAh\u2026there it was again: an example of how someone\u2019s musical tastes evolve with age\u2026 it\u2019s just something that happens with most people\u2026 most of take that as a given\u2026not me, though\u2026this is something that\u2019s always fascinated me\u2026there has to be some science behind why we listen to different types and styles of music as we go through life\u2026\nSo I tracked down this science and I have some answers\u2026we\u2019ll call this episode \u201cwhat a drag it is getting old\u2014musically\u201d\u2026\nLearn more about your ad choices.
