A Brief History of Alt Psychedelic Rock

b'Here\\u2019s one of the most misunderstood and misused words in the English language: \\u201cpsychedelic\\u201d \\u2026\\n\\nThe word first came into use in 1956 when a psychiatrist named Humphrey Osmond was studying a new class of pharmaceuticals that had potential when it came to treating certain mental disorders\\u2026\\n\\nA chemical known as lysergic acid diethylamide\\u2014LSD, for short\\u2014had been extracted by a Swiss scientist named Albert Hoffman from a fungus called \\u201cergot\\u201d\\u2026from 1943 on, medical professionals tried to figure out what it could be used for\\u2026it was even marketed commercially for a while under the brand name \\u201cdelysid\\u201d\\u2026\\n\\nThen the CIA got involved, thinking that LSD could be used for things like interrogation, chemical warfare and mind control\\u2026but that\\u2019s a whole other story...\\n\\nBecause the chemical resulted in people entering an altered state of perception, some started using it recreationally\\u2026 artists discovered its properties and started taking acid trip, looking for inspiration and new creative roads\\u2026\\n\\nThen other psychedelics went mainstream, including mescaline (which comes from the peyote plant) and psylocybin (which you get from certain mushrooms) before just about all of these drugs were made illegal\\u2026\\n\\nMeanwhile, \\u201cpsychedelic\\u201d\\u2014which means \\u201csoul-revealing\\u201d in Greek\\u2014became an adjective\\u2026it describes anything that could be described as mind expanding, anything that alters the way we perceive reality\\u2026\\n\\nNaturally, this quickly extended to music\\u2026psych became a thing in the 60s\\u2014that sound, feel, vibe, attitude continues today with alt-rock\\u2026\\n\\nThis is a quick history of psych in the world of alternative music\\u2026\\n\\n\\xa0\\n\\nSongs used in this episode:\\n\\n\\nKula Skaker - Tattva\\n\\nThe Soft Boys - Give It To The Soft Boys\\n\\nTeardrop Explodes - Sleeping Gas\\n\\nEcho and the Bunnymen - Bring on the Dancing Horses\\n\\nSiousxie and the Banshees - Dear Prudence\\n\\nSpaceman 3 - Revolution\\n\\nThe Bangles - Hero Takes A Fall\\n\\nMy Bloody Valentine - Soon\\n\\nThe Verve - Slide Away\\n\\nTame Impala - Elephant\\n\\n\\nLearn more about your ad choices.
