Does Leadership Suck?

Published: Sept. 8, 2020, 9:30 a.m.

So many high-level executives are disillusioned with being “at the top.”

The thing is, if you’re lonely at the top, you’re doing it wrong.

The other thing to remember is that YOU are a leader, no matter where you are in an organization, family, or community. YOU. You’re a model for someone. If you’re around people, you’re being observed.

So, you owe it to yourself to be your best self.

Key points in this episode:

  • Push
  • Serve Greatly
  • Excel

How? Five key things you need to be valuing. Then, leading (and being in the state of leading = leadership) won’t suck.

  1. Value your time. No one else will if you don’t. Be willing to delegate (not abdicate).
  2. Value your health, energy, and vitality. Invest in your sleep, what you eat, and how much you smile. Breathe in deeply and exhale fully.
  3. Value the people around you. Everyone wants to know that what they’re doing makes a difference and they want to be acknowledged for contributing. Can you make sure that the people around you in your organization AND at home know that?
  4. Value your financial resources. Are you obsessing or checking and tracking? Or, do you have your head in the sand instead of checking and tracking? Yeah, it’s that check and track thing. Do that.
  5. Value your growth and development. The most elite and highest performing athletes have coaches that help them get better. Not because the coaches are better athletes, but because the coaches can see things that the players can’t. You NEED an outside perspective if you’re going to move to your next level. If you’ve had a coach, you know that’s true. If you’ve never had a coach, it’s time to find one.
