My Get Up and Go Has Got Up and Went I don’t usually write poetry. And from what I just shared, you can probably tell why. But criticism be damned. My point is that sometimes we get in a rut. And the best way to get out of it is not by pondering our way through our mental blocks but to unlock ourselves by actually doing something. Whether that be making the bed.Walking the dog. Working out.Calling your mum.Arranging something.Rearranging something.Rearranging our minds all in an effort to get unstuck. As legendary science fiction writer Ray Bradbury said… Don’t think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It’s self-conscious and anything self-conscious is lousy. You can’t try to do things. You simply must do things. You simply must do things. I think that’s so true. We have to squeeze out the overthink. Do something and do it now. Too often ‘later’ becomes ‘never’. If we wait until we’re ready, we’ll be waiting for the rest of our lives. And as Jessamyn West says…Delay breeds fear. That’s why I force myself to sit down and write, even when I have nothing to say. I just start typing. Or I page through my massive quote collection and see if there’s something that strikes my fancy. Or rifle through my bookshelves to see if something stands out. Legend has it that George Harrison was in a book store when he read about a weeping guitar, leading to the classic Beatles tune, While My Guitar Gently Weeps. Inspiration is all around us. But we have to go engage it, not wait for it to come to us. That’s just lazy. So, what are you waiting for? I mean, thanks for giving me some of your time, that means a lot to me. However, I want to see and hear what you have to say. And I’m sure others feel the same way. Procrastination is, hands down, our favorite form of self-sabotage.Don’t fall for it. Don’t feed it. Just go. Go write something. Go paint something. Go make something. Go now or you’ll have to endure more of my sophomoric poetry. Got me? If you don’t, maybe you’ll believe Stephen King when says, “The scariest moment is always just before you start. After that, things can only get better.” His book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, is chock full of advice about how to get started, and keep going. Considering that he’s published nearly 60 novels and 11 collections of stories, you may want to read what he says. * Usually we take a break here, but that would kinda defeat the point here. So, that‘s going to wrap up our 45th episode of Navigating the Fustercluck. Here from Deaf Mule Studios, I’m your host, Wegs, like eggs with a W, and thanks again for listening in and supporting us. If there are other ways you know to get unstuck, please feel free to reach out to me personally and share at wegs24x7@gmail.com or NavigatingTheFustercluck.com, where you can find transcripts to this episode and every other of our 44 efforts. Finally, remember, we’re all in this together. If you see someone stuck in their thoughts, give them a friendly nudge. Here’s to you. Here’s to the future. Now go.
