IT’S ELECTION DAY! If you haven’t already, get out and vote.

Culture of secrecy

Everybody wants you to vote, but talking about who you actually voted for is next to sin in America

Voting used to be a public affair, non-secret. Prior to the 20th century

In other U.S. elections, candidates are elected directly by popular vote. But the president and vice president are not elected directly by citizens. Instead, they’re chosen by “electors”

Each state gets as many electors as it has members of Congress (House and Senate)

Each state’s political parties choose their own slate of potential electors, there are currently 538 electors in all

Election night is only a projected winner.

The actual Electoral College vote takes place in mid-December when the electors meet in their states.

Congress doesn’t actually count the electoral votes until January!!

The Constitution doesn’t require electors to follow their state's popular vote, many states' laws do.

Though it's rare, electors have challenged those laws and voted for someone else.

But in July 2020 the Supreme Court ruled that those state laws are constitutional. Electors must follow their state's popular vote, if the state has passed such a law.

Consider being more active in primary elections of House and Senate representatives because every 4 years, that choice may decide on your president. Certainly more than your vote come presidential election time.
