Laborers in the Vineyard

Matthew --- Matthew 20:1-16 Jesus tells a controversial parable where the kind of grace we normally celebrate becomes a point of contention among those who receive it. Two thousand years separate us from these texts and it's still just as easy to hear the voice of the laborers as our own. The wage we earn for a longer day of work is the same for those who only worked a fraction? This is a parable that can get uncomfortably close to the heart of who we can be. Rather than celebrate a generous master we tend to be incensed when that same generosity bucks our own expectations of value. True followers of Christ are called to rejoice in the sharing of the Kingdom and must be humble enough to become servants for the less fortunate.
