Nelson BC Mayor John Dooley was born and raised in Ireland, emigrating to Canada in 1967. He became a Canadian citizen in 1974. John and his wife, Pat, made their life in Nelson and have been happily married for over 40 years. They have three wonderful children, Erin, Shelagh and Sean, whom with their spouses, have 7 grandchildren and counting.\\xa0 John spent the majority of his career as a self-employed home inspector and contractor while taking on numerous volunteer and coordinator roles in organizations such as youth soccer, Nelson Leafs Junior hockey team, Canadian Cancer Society, Capitol Theatre Restoration Society, Communities in Bloom, and the Nelson Rotary Club.\\xa0 He was first elected as a Nelson City Councillor in 1999 and as Mayor in 2005. John was a Councilor for two terms and is now in his fourth term as Mayor. In addition to his work as Nelson\\u2019s Mayor, John is Chair of the Nelson Police Board and has been nominated or elected to a number of boards and committees, including the\\xa0 Regional District of Central Kootenay, Kootenay Citizens\\u2019 Conservation Council on Climate Action, Columbia Basin Trust, just to name a few.\\xa0 Mayor Dooley spent 6 years on the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Board of Directors and was Chair of the FCM British Columbia Caucus. In his spare time, John enjoys many extra-curricular activities including hiking, skiing, fishing, hunting and golf. He and Pat also enjoy spending as much time as they can with their children and grandchildren.
