State Historical Society - 160 Years - Shambaugh

The State of Iowa was just 11 years old when some of its early residents had the foresight to create the State Historical Society of Iowa, in 1857. Even then, they recognized the value of Iowa history and wanted to safeguard it for generations to come. The State Historical Society of Iowa celebrates those pioneer founders as well as all of the Iowans who have carried on their legacy over the last 160 years.

This program is part of its 160th anniversary open house and celebration and features a brief talk by historian Rebecca Conard about the trailblazing Iowa historian Benjamin Shambaugh.

Rebecca Conard is Professor of History Emerita and former Director of the Public History Program at Middle State University. Among her Iowa-related books are Places of Quiet Beauty: Parks, Preserves, and Environmentalism and Benjamin Shambaugh and the Intellectual Foundations of Public History.
