MusicIC 2016: Mendelssohn as Muse

Published: June 17, 2016, 10 a.m.

MusicIC returns for a sixth season to present three programs exploring the theme of Inspiration and Hommage. Alongside the great string quartets of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven and Mendelssohn, this summer's programming features a recent work by the Pulitzer prize-winning composer, Caroline Shaw, as well as an innovative evening of storytelling and live music at the Englert Theatre that will bring MusicIC's 2016 summer programming to an exciting and inventive finale.

This program features two pieces by Mendelssohn, performed by the Solera Quartet, which includes Tricia Park, Miki-Sophia Cloud, Molly Carr, and Andrew Janss. Other performers include soprano Megan Brus and pianist Minji Kwon. The program also features works read by writers Robin Hemley, Daniel Khalastchi, Amy Margolis, and Sabrina Orah Mark. These writers participate as part of MusicIC's ongoing partnership with the Iowa Summer Writing Festival.

MusicIC was inaugurated in 2010 by Artistic Director Tricia Park and Managing Director Judith Hurtig, and was supported by The University of Iowa Office of the Vice President for Research and the Division of Performing Arts, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In 2013, it moved to Summer of the Arts, which produced the festival through its 2015 season. This year, MusicIC moves to a new home with the Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature organization.
