Truly Understanding

Morning Mantra: “You will never truly understand something unless it happens to you.”

To truly understand what someone is experiencing you must have experienced it yourself. You can try to understand, you can have compassion for them, but true understanding requires you to stand in their shoes of experience. To know what they know. To have seen what they have seen. To experience the emotions they feel.

You can have an understanding rooted in an appreciation of other human beings as real people who also suffer. You can “put” yourself in their shoes and have a desire to want to help. But because you’ve never experienced it you will still judge their response to the situation, and to your help.

A real understanding is rooted in knowing what it’s like TO BE in their shoes. It’s an understanding void of judgement.
For example, you can see someone experiencing a loss and want to help, to get them feeling better again. That has ego involved because if they feel better YOU will also feel better.

When you KNOW what it’s like to experience the same loss, then you TRULY understand. Your perspective changes. You know if there is anything that WILL help, you KNOW what you need to do or not do based on an deep understanding. Your feelings are void of ego judgements.
