Jefferson Pierce grew up on the mean streets of Suicide Slum. When his father was killed by an errant bullet in a mob hit gone wrong, he was taken under the wing of an Italian tailor named Peter Gambi. One day Gambi made Jefferson a super-suit and the young man's life was forever changed. He sat about fighting crime as the superhero called Black Lightning.
