Comfy Cozy
Show Notes
Intro/ Premise of the show:
Hello, I’m cozy novelist, Etta Welk, alongside my skeptical mother, Deb. Each week, we’ll explore cozy and traditional mystery books, series, authors, origins, culture, or tropes, but we’ll keep it short and sweet, just like a real cozy.
Question and Answer session. One of us will pose a weekly question that we both answer. We’re reading cozies, you’re reading cozies, but we’re not reading the same cozies… so NO SPOILERS!
Update
· Writing on the fly. Potty training is a nightmare.
· Some vacations coming up.
· Deb? How have you been doing this past week?

Summary
Historical mystery set in Roaring ‘20s. Olive Belgrave is an independent woman living in London trying to make it on her own, including solving a deadly mystery.
Slow moving historical set in 1920s. Doesn’t have a lot of cozy elements I like, such as humor.
Sleuth
Olive is adorable. It’s easy to be on her side. She’s an educated wannabe working girl. She’s very relateable to 21 century readers.
Not as much connection with this sleuth
Setting
Seems well research and unforced. I believe this is what London and the English countryside felt like in 1923.
Author did a great job researching
Suspects
I didn’t struggle trying to remember all the potential suspects. Author did a nice job of reintroducing them and giving small reminders so readers didn’t have to solely identify characters/suspects by name.
Easy to follow—maybe pacing too easy. I really liked that she had misplaced suspicion.
Side Story
Not enough characterization outside of the mystery. Didn’t feel invested in fringe characters. Maybe future books build more lasting relationships.
Needed some more hooks to get reader invested
Solution
I like books that surprise me but are believable (and wrap everything up in a nice bow. This book did just that.
Wrapped everything up nicely. Outcome really surprised me!
Suitable for:
Audio version narrated by Elisabeth Klett was wonderful. She had great delivery. The pacing of the story was slow—but that made it a nice listen while puttering around the house.
I thought the narration was a little monotone. Didn’t really work for me. Didn’t really learn anything new about the time.
What we’re reading: Agatha Christie – The Mysterious Affair at Styles
