In 2016, the European Society of Cardiology guidelines added the recommendation that all newly diagnosed patients with heart failure be screened for iron deficiency.
This discussion focuses on why iron deficiency is important, how it relates to heart failure, and the potential mechanisms by which it contributes to heart failure symptoms. The importance of proactive screening for iron deficiency in patients with heart failure and the benefits of treatment with intravenous iron for those with symptomatic HFrEF are also explored.
