It was 1979 when I first heard Prince singing, I Wanna Be You’re Lover. Back then, I didn’t know he was Prince. I didn’t know his name. I was about eight years old. Whenever I heard his song on the radio, I Wanna Be You’re Lover, I’d say: Hey! That’s the I ain’t got no money song. ( I ain’t got no money). That was my favorite line from the lyrics because that’s what I always heard my parents say. Prince got my attention right away at the beginning of his song. Somebody was always saying “I ain’t got no money”. Thank God at the time in those days I was able to see frozen dinners and welfare cheese.

I Wanna Be You’re Lover is a song written and produced by Prince. I had no idea what Prince looked like. The song was his first major hit single in the United States, reaching number 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 on Jan. 26, 1980, holding the number 11 position for two weeks, and peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot Soul Singles chart for two weeks.

When I first heard Prince, I didn’t know that I was listening to a musical genius. I didn’t know that he would be a mega star. Prince left us on April 21, 2016 aged 57. It is said that he left hundreds of songs behind. That he had a huge vault of unreleased music. Maybe we will get to hear some of his unreleased music.

I hope you have enjoyed today’s topic, Prince. I’m your host Gail Nobles on the Cat Bear. A music commentary show. Thank you for listening.
