In this episode of Building Utah we take a look at Salt Lake City's new business and multi-family recycling ordinance. Salt Lake City has a goal to achieve Zero Waste by 2040, which means all waste is recycled, reused, or composted instead of being sent to a landfill. Businesses and multi-family properties produce 50% of all waste in the Salt Lake City, but only 10-15% of that waste is currently recycled. When widespread business and multi-family recycling goes into effect, more than 20,000 tons of material will be kept out of the landfill. The Solid Waste and Recycling Ordinance went into effect January 4, 2016. Businesses have until January 4, 2018 to comply.
