Speaking on Business: SkillUp Utah

This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. The coronavirus has disrupted the economic health of many Utahns, creating job loss and layoffs across business sectors. The virus is not only a national challenge but an individual one, and many people must explore occupational opportunities, as well as develop and hone skills. To help them, an exciting new resource has recently launched to connect displaced workers to training that can prepare them for in-demand jobs – skilled jobs in healthcare, technology and advanced manufacturing. The website is skilluputah.com, and it provides a clearinghouse of companies and universities that offer certificates and training programs for jobs that will be necessary for the economy despite the virus. These resources are for both the unemployed and underemployed to gain ground toward a better career. Some of the offerings are free, while the costs of others have been reduced to make them accessible to almost anyone.  The state has set aside money for tuition, books and other materials for those needing support. Utah Leads Together 4.0 called for this type of program to help us build out a long-term recovery process that will be sustainable. The old saying that the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago and the second best time is now holds true for new skills. There is no better time than now to skill up and pandemic-proof your potential. Please visit skilluputah.com to learn more and take the next step. I’m Derek Miller, with the Salt Lake Chamber, and this is “Speaking on Business.” Originally Aired: August 19, 2020.
