Improving Your Contemporary Class

Published: Jan. 6, 2022, 11 a.m.

Whether your are a new teacher or have been teaching for years, I think there is always a way to tweak and improve our class offerings. In the contemporary class world, the range of techniques, style, and information is vast. One contemporary class is not like any other. Because of this, it's important that we take steps to clarify the kind of class we teach so that our students to better grasp the ideas we want to share.

In this episode, Brandon shares three ways to improve your contemporary class in 2022. The ideas are broad but can be applied to anyone who is currently teaching or in the process of forming a class.

1) Take the mystery out of your class

Class description by Dual Rivet for Gibney Dance Center: Dual Rivet\u2019s Contemporary Floorwork class explores intense physicality through strength building techniques, attention to placement and weight, and a curiosity to move. Beginning with a warm up, across the floor, and then robust phrase work, the class emphasizes our maximum physical capacity as movers. Inspired heavily by capoeira, street dance, acrobatics, and release technique we will focus on softening and delving into safe practices while learning. The result will be momentous, seamless and sustainable movement, allowing for freedom within our form and personal exploration of style and musicality.

2) Decide what your class IS NOT
3) Find what is consistent
